It's really a shame to waste an important political opportunity on "I told ya so!". Bush justified a lot of his excesses by saying he was bringing america up to speed in the event of crisis. This was clearly a crisis and he and homeland security failed in a spectacular way. If the left can focus squarely on this event and financial irresponsibility, they have excellent leverage. IF they can leave the war in Iraq alone and concentrate on domestic issues, they have more. and finally, If the left can keep from doing the smug, triumphant dance on the heads of the republicans, they might be able to clean house.

This really isn't a good start in that direction.

I think the point is that Bush did sweep into office on the strength of his "leadership" after the 9/11 attacks on New York, and his promise to protect the country against any future acts of terrorism.

And yet New York City, which, one would think, would be Bush's greatest supporter, voted overwhelmingly (over 85%) against him in 2004.

This is because Bush's team was a master at spin, so the rest of the country saw him as New York's savior... but New Yorkers saw what really happened, and were Not Impressed. Hence the linked essay begins:

Ever wonder why New Yorkers detest George Bush?
Because we experienced his incompetence up close and person.
