Chapter 1 //
** 2 **
As always, Sho was almost two hours early at work. He was sitting alone in the managers' bay, doing his usual before-work routine. Re-arranging the stack of post-its on his desk, making sure all his pens were still there and checking if he had washed his tumbler the shift before, even though he’s sure he had. He checks his computer and makes sure he’s got the previous shift’s workload done and makes the current shift’s action plan so that he could concentrate on his supervisors and their teams' questions during the actual shift. After all this, he puts lip balm and hand cream on, and goes out to get coffee.
“Sho-chan, good morning.” A slightly sleepy and sing-song voice came from behind as he was standing from his chair. It was Satoshi, of course.
“G’morning, boss.”
“Don’t call me that.” He sat on Sho’s desk, a tall cup of coffee in hand.
“How was your weekend?” This was asked with a small smile on his lips. Satoshi was quite laid back and didn’t like to be addressed as boss or sir, but that wasn’t very obvious because of how he was always dressed at work. His shirts and suits were always very crisp, and his hair was parted neatly to one side and was styled into what looked like a wave only a skilled surfer could ride. Sho knows he only looked like that in the office, though. During days off he looked like a total bum. When they weren’t out drinking together, he was always out fishing, barely recognizable. Sometimes he even smelled like a bum, Sho thought.
“It was pretty great. Yours? Fishing again?”
Satoshi shook his head. “I didn’t get to go.”
“Oh. What happened?” Sho asked, walking off with his tumbler. Satoshi followed his friend out of the office. It was always like this with Satoshi. If you didn’t ask follow up questions, you aren’t getting any answers either.
“My driver’s wife gave birth so he couldn’t make it.” Another fact bout Account Director Satoshi Ohno: he didn’t know how to drive.
“Tell him congratulations from me.” Sho said.
Satoshi nodded.
“You remember Jun Matsumoto?” They were walking towards the nearby 7-eleven, Sho wanting to buy a sachet of his favorite instant coffee.
Satoshi took a sip from his tall cup before answering. “Yeah, Kazunari’s best friend?”
Sho chuckled. “Everything seems to be about Kazunari lately.”
Satoshi gave Sho a what the hell are you talking about? look, his face all scrunched up. “Anyway, what about Jun Matsumoto?”
“We’re dating.”
“Really?” Satoshi looked almost delighted. “Speaking as your boss, though, I don’t want your personal life to conflict with work, okay?”
“My personal life? Conflict with work? When did that ever happen?” They were at the 7-eleven counter now, Sho paying for a few of the things he picked up.
Satoshi took another long, loud sip from his coffee. “Yuriko.”
“Ah, her.” Sho rolled his eyes, laughing at what his boss-slash-friend said.
Yuriko was Sho’s team mate-turned-fellow-supervisor-turned-subordinate and they dated for a while. She wasn’t very well at handling stress and pressure so Sho volunteered to help her with managing her team but ended up adding to the pressure she was feeling instead, until she finally decided to quit. She claimed that Sho was “terrorizing” her about work even though they were out having dinner, and sometimes even when they were having sex. Sho said otherwise, though. According to him, he never terrorized her. He was just giving her tips on how to make things work better even under all that stress but she never listened to his advice and also didn’t take critique very well. Based from his own observation, Satoshi sided with his friend on this.
“I don’t think Jun is like her at all.”
All he had from Satoshi was a shrug and an “If you say so.”
Sho was asking about the whole account’s performance while they walked back to the office and Satoshi was telling him about a few things, the statistics they needed to improve and how they should do it. Sho was a bit surprised when his boss stopped dead on his tracks, almost spilling his coffee on himself. “Satoshi, what the hell...?” He followed his friend’s gaze and found Jun and Nino sitting on the sidewalk smoking. He laughed a bit.
“Hey.” He walked towards the other pair, Satoshi following along.
Jun looked up and flashed Sho the best smile he could muster. “Hey. Ah, Ohno-san, good morning.” Jun stood up to greet their director, so did Nino.
Satoshi cleared his throat and croaked a good morning in response.
“We were just having our coffee. You guys wanna join us over there?” Sho pointed to the table at the far end.
Both Jun and Nino agreed.
Four of them were huddled in the table when Masaki passed by. He just waved at them and gave them a cheery good morning, walking as fast as he could to wherever he was going. He worked with IT and almost everybody knew him, since well, he was very friendly and wouldn’t hesitate helping anyone out especially when it came to computer problems. He’s also very, very good looking, both Sho and Jun thought at the same time, unaware. Sho looked at his watch to distract himself and chuckled. It was 5 minutes to 9 PM and Masaki was almost late.
Nino had lost track of time since he was busy playing on his phone. He looked up and found Sho and Jun were already having a very animated conversation about something related to politics, shuddering at them flirting so obviously, all the subtle touching and the really sticky staring and the sometimes over exaggerated laughing at jokes that weren’t even that funny. They should just definitely get a room or something. Nino turned his attention to Satoshi and noticed that he never said anything since they greeted him a few minutes ago. He put his phone down and lit a cigarette.
“Boss, something wrong?” Nino asked through a small cloud of smoke. He noticed the director was well dressed as always, his hair the same hairstyle but in a slightly lighter shade of brown. Nino had always thought that Satoshi was good looking for his age... like how older wine always tastes better.
Satoshi looked at him without moving his head. “Nothing.”
Nino nodded, looking around, thinking of what else to ask. “Do you play these 5 versus 5 games on your phone, too, boss?”
The director shook his head. “I don’t like using my phone very much.”
“Oh.” Nino took another hit from his cigarette. “What do you like doing on your free time?”
“Fishing.” He replied almost instantly, face beaming.
Nino was a bit surprised at how fast the response was and laughed a bit. “That sounds cool." He said, when he actually meant That was hella cute. That’s new, huh? I mean, what do you like about fishing? I don’t know a lot of people who like fishing.”
Then Satoshi started telling Nino about how fishing was really relaxing, and that there was nothing better than the feeling of a big catch tugging on the rod, he enumerated several kinds of fish he loved to catch and all the other fishes he’d already caught before, and some of the places he really loved to fish at.
Nino was listening as intently as he could, a small ‘o’ on his lips, also thinking what Director Satoshi Ohno would look like fresh out of a shower after sex. “Woah, that’s kinda cool.” He took a sip from his coffee, smiling. “And I guess people’re wrong when they say you don’t talk pretty much, huh.”
By this time, Sho and Jun had already stopped talking and Sho was raising both his eyebrows at Satoshi, looking quite proud. “I don’t mean to disturb your conversation, guys, and I’d like to stay and talk more but our shift starts at 10 PM. We’ll see you guys later.” Sho stood up and gave Jun a light squeeze on his arm.
Jun gave his boyfriend a small wave. So did Satoshi to Nino.
“Wooooah, what was that?” Jun turned to Nino, itching with curiosity. "There's something you're not telling me."
Nino chuckled. "Before we talk about me, let's talk about you first and who won the bet."
Jun rolled his eyes and proceeded to tell Nino about what happened last weekend in detail, including the whole almost-sex-but-didn't-happen part.
“He did what?” Nino choked on a puff of smoke he just took in and was now having a coughing fit.
“He pushed me away and drove off, just like that.” Jun lit a new cigarette.
“That’s some tough contender we have right there, J.” Nino took several gulps from his cup of now lukewarm coffee after a puff of smoke. “But you guys are explicitly dating now, right?”
Jun shrugged. “I guess. I mean we are seeing each other again so I'm assuming.”
"You know what they say though, never count your chicks before your eggs hatch or some shit like that." Nino smiled, putting out his cigarette with his heel. “Bright side is maybe this time he'll fuck you for sure.”
“He better.”
"Free lunch for a week, oh yeah." Nino was back on his phone again.
Jun continued to smoke his stick and drink his coffee. A comfortable silence, except for Nino's small cussing and tiny tippy-tappy noises on his phone screen. "You want to tell me something about you and Satoshi?"
Nino just glanced at Jun and went back to his game.
"Kazunari, I might be new here but I'm not dumb. Everybody knows Satoshi Ohno isn't chummy with anyone except Sho and that little wave he gave you was just plain out of character."
Nino thought Jun was going to let it slide but damn, of course he wouldn't. J gets what he wants when he wants it... except for Sho's dick, apparently. "I'll tell you... But not here."
"Coffee after shift then because I smell something really good's cooking for some reason." Jun threw his cigarette away and stood up. "I'm going inside. One of my supervisor's handling a new team fresh from training and I need to debrief them."
Nino said a quick ok, yeah, see you without looking up, feigning concentration on his game when he was actually trying to figure out how to start telling his best friend that he made out with their account director in the company's stuffy storage room.
