i think you've provided an exceptionally balanced view of the situation. the death benefits for servicepeople outraged me a bit at first (as my father served in the canadian forces), but the policy geek in me instantly recognized the difference between pay/allowances and benefits as well.

i really hope this gets resolved, and soon. as i commented in another person's journal, we have goverment fall and an election called when budgets fail, but the public service doesn't stop working; this whole "shutdown of government" just doesn't make sense in an abstract "how governments should work" sort of way.
