My Beliefs #2: The Importance of Seeking the Truth

Apr 24, 2005 16:38

Yesterday I wrote about my beliefs concerning the Bible, the truth of the message it contains and our inability to interpret it with complete accuracy. This idea in my mind is held in tension with another idea that seems to be in opposition. There's a question that naturally flows from what I discussed in the previous entry. If we are in fact, so ( Read more... )

In the previous two entries, you've spoke about Christianity and The Bible without mentiong Jesus. Are you referring to the Old Testament or the New Testament? It just seems odd to me that you (as a Christian) would spend that much time talking about God's Word without mentioning Jesus. If you're referring to the Old Testament, btw, it's also the book of Jews and Muslims, but you're only referring to "you Christians," so I'm not sure.

I agree with you when you say you want to encourage people to follow God honestly the way they see as best, and not "your" way because you think you're right. Even though many Christians do so with good intentions, I think trying to make people believe the same thing you do is implying that you don't accept what they believe in to begin with, and maybe I'm wrong, but I always thought acceptance is exactly what Jesus was trying to preach.

That is a fair observation, and an important one. My only answer is I haven't gotten there yet. I felt it was important for people to understand that what I'm going to write about is Jesus, God, the universe, as I have come to understand it. So I'm not trying to push anything here, or condemn anyone for not coming to the same conclusions as me. I also thought it important to explain why I think searching is still valuable, even though in this life we may never reach an end to that searching, per se ( ... )

That's fair. I think you make it pretty clear that what you believe is exactly that, and not you trying to convert or preach. I'm looking forward to hear you out :-)

I do think, however, that the word "truth" gets thrown around a little too much. A truth is something you can prove and something that is fact, something that is universal. I know people use the term "the truth" or "my truth" and the like, but something that's true has to be true for everyone.
