The first play is pretty interesting. It seems like BRIEF would be better than FIBRE because it sets up the S hook more strongly and you already have it. It also has a more defensive board shape, which is probably good with a small lead and above average leave. Did you want to have a more open board because Chris is a more defensively-minded player? That could be good. I wonder what the best play vs. a perfect player is and also what the best play is against Chris. I wonder what two tiles leaves you are supposed to play BRIEF with and what leaves you play FIBRE with, against a variety of different opponents. The most obvious candidate for BRIEF looks like BEFGINR or maybe BEFGIIR. On the other hand FIBRE seems good with a rack like BEFIIMR. I think that if you have an S and have to choose between BRIEF and FIBRE (e.g. don't have BEFIRSX or BEFIRSV or something) you should pick BRIEF. What if you have the blank? Of course this is unlikely but BCEFIR? works. I think you are supposed to play FIBRE because the board is probably more ( ... )

I agree with all this...actually I didn't even think of BRIEF or I would've played it. I think when the margins are small you should definitely think about how you intend to shape the board against your opponent. I don't think of Chris as being particularly defensive, so I would likely do BRIEF in retrospect.

I'm surprised FIB hasn't been mentioned, which looks very close if not better.

I tend to open short, but I think ENRS is relatively weak. I'd be more inclined to play FIB with ELRS left over. A sim to 2-3k shows that FIB leaving ENRS sims about .5-1 point better than BRIEF or FIBRE, and FIB leaving ELRS is about the same...so perhaps I had an unjustified aversion to ENRS.
