The Route to Advancement - A Merlin Fic

Feb 26, 2009 19:46

My second Merlin story! This idea just appeared in my head randomly and then had to be written, I think this is what comes of reading about early modern courts and 'advancement' and getting the ear of the King etc. Anyway here it is.

Now beta'd by the wonderful vensre - all remaining mistakes are of course my own! Also posted at merlinxarthur.

On to the story... )

fanfic, percy, route to advancement, merlin/arthur

Awww, this series is adorable :) I'm off to read the rest. I love the outsider view of Merlin and Arthur's highly unusual manservant/master relationship *hee*

This is really awesome, I have just sat here having fits of giggles as I read it. I particularly enjoyed the tug of war over the ale cup and Merlin trying to steal it back without Arthur listening.

Woah - how did I miss your comment? I'm so sorry!

Anyway, thank you! I'm really pleased you enjoyed it. I adore writing drunk Merlin, and Arthur dealing with him of course (Merlin will be singing all the way back to Gaius's chambers). And I have become rather fond of Percy too :D

Dude, what I'm wondering is how I had NO IDEA this series even existed!! Actually, it's possible I know and just don't know I know. Anyway, whatever. Point being - I found it now (well, it's actually been recced a few times in the last month or two on merlin_finders and I'd bookmarked it to read in December, except Christmas kept me way too busy so I'm getting to it now!)

Uh, that's probably enough pre-amble. Anyway...this was HILARIOUS! I really loved it. I think that it's such a perfect concept too - that in order to be known, Percy should connect with the one person that is closest to Arthur.

Merlin was adorably hilarious in this! As was the Merlin/Arthur dynamic in general. Ahhhh...I'm just filled with happiness upon reading this. And now I have 3 more to go! Hurray! (Though I likely won't get to them tonight. Still...looking forward to it!)

I loved Percy's horror at everyting Merlin did - calling for Arthur, talking about calling him a prat (even though Percy thought he just thought it), actually calling Arthur a prat, being ( ... )

:D Percy would probably be very relieved not to be noticed TOO much. Poor Percy, he really does have a lot to learn about how things work in Camelot, it's lucky Sir Edwin is a bit more on the ball!!

The whole idea for this came about when I was reading some very long article about systems of patronage and influence in Tudor England, and because I am actually incapable of not relating everything to Merlin, Percy was born. I'm kind of fascinated with just how much influence Merlin does have (or would in a real court), because he is the closest person to Arthur on a day to day basis, and is one of the few people who seem to be able to give a real opinion and influence Arthur's decisions. Ooooh, now I want to write MORE FIC about this :) Sadly, I still have beta'd fics to correct and post. But the plot bunnies seem to be hopping again... :D

Thanks for your comment!!!

Yeah, it's so fascinating how much influence Merlin actually has in Arthur's life in general, isn't it? Like there is no way he should...but I'm glad that he does. Arthur needs someone he can rely on and confide in and simply be himself around. Plus, it's so true that canonically Merlin is able to give real opinions and influence Arthur!

I love this topic too actually. And I have started working on that other fic (that was discussed in merlin_finders)...but I've got like 3 other plot bunnies running around in my head and one fic I NEED to finish first! Still, I hear you on that. The whole equality of their relationship has really been a thought on my mind as of late.

Anywho, this had nothing to do with your story, other than to tell you how much I loved it! Looking forward to reading the rest :).
