“You didn’t need to hex him,” Lily said quietly as they walked the grounds after dinner.
“He laughed at me!” Severus said.
“You fell off your broom.”
“Hmph.”
“On your bum.”
She was hiding a smile. Severus changed tactics. “W-w-why take W-wilkes’s side against mine, anyway?”
Lily sighed.

Potion and antidote. Curse and counter-curse. Magic meant that the wizarding world was balanced in a way the Muggle world was not. Magic meant that any wizard was potentially the equal of any other, so long as the spells rolled readily off his tongue.
Severus Snape believed in reciprocity. Why didn’t anyone else?
