Very clear tutorial. Thank you - I honestly have no idea how to use the freehand pen tool, so I pretty much stay away from that area of Photoshop. :)
I'm wondering, though: how is this superior to drawing a squiggly line with a 1px brush in whatever color you choose, on the same or a different layer of the icon? (I don't mean my question to be in any way negative - I'm simply curious.)
And to answer your question... Using the Pen tool/Path method, if you wanted to go back and change the shape of your path, you could easily do that with the Add/Delete Anchor Point Tool without having to delete all of the work on the path or layer that you've made.
Alright, I think if you can't click on the hollow circle your path might not be selected. Make sure you're in the Paths palette and click on the Work Path. That should make your path show up on your image and then you should be able to click on the hollow circle.

when i mouse over that to click it, a red circle w/ line through it appears and won't let me click it.
something isn't work right for me :(
