Great fic, love the imagery especially the line about water settling in lungs and hollowing out.

This is just a magical fic that crawls right under her skin and I love so much the detail about where she sleeps - I know canon differed and canon hadn't happened yet, but to be honest I prefer this? As much as I ship Rebekah/Elena it was a side note thrown in and this tiny little detail says so many small sharp things about Elena, about her headspace and her indifference but the place she still lives in her head under it all.

Also this is so much better than canon could ever dream to be, ever.

The image of Miranda creeping up on her in bed, in Alaric's bed after she'd died, is just so terrible and aching at once, and the sense of Elena's shock and something idyllic and lost and then bam, the alcohol and the very unpretty reality, that was just overall done so well. And then the flipside - the threatening face. The part with her dad is disturbing but it feels bitter and real from start to finish, from Elena dismissing it as a nightmare plaguing her to the almost mundane nature of the conversation until he gets right into her guts.

I agree. I wrote a whole chunk of these TVD fics after being so upset/dissatisfied with s4 and every choice, that I just really felt compelled to write better things than what we were given. And I remember wanting Silas to be something that was monstrous in how he could imitate people and prey on you that way. And I so wanted it to be Jeremy that was the catalyst for her. So that really drove this. Which makes me so happy that it worked so well for you here.
