Don stared and asked, “What? What do you mean Mom had an ability?”
His father gave him a tired smile, shoulders shrugging not in denial but in an affable way.
He returned the gesture with a look that clearly begged for why this had been kept a secret; even though on some level he knew why it’d been kept this way, the same reason that he would have kept this buried only with him.
“We didn’t know much about what she could do or if there were others like it. We watched to see if you or Charlie would inherit something and we thought at some point you did, but then it wasn’t the same.”
Don leaned forward. “What could Mom do?”
“Her music. She could pluck sounds from the air and recreate them through the piano.”
He was about to respond when the third person, who’d been ignored and silent, exploded. Charlie sat up, looking back and forth between his brother and father, papers rustling beside him. “What is going on? What are you two even talking about? Is this some form of joke? Superheroes and superpowers don’t exist.”
Don took a moment to look at his younger brother. The mathematician was grounded in numbers and science and things that could explained through the use of those two principles. Pure word would not be enough to convince him.
He stood and reached across to the couch, grabbing one of Charlie’s students’ test papers. It shook in his fist. “I can touch objects and learn about their owners. It’s called clairvoyance,” eyes closed, he thought about what Megan had taught him. The pictures came easier this time. “Blonde hair, brown eyes. Sits in the second row. One of the first ones to finish your exam.”
Charlie's lips did an impression of the koi. "Well... Well, damn."
