Don drummed his fingers against his SUV’s steering wheel, face turned towards the front door of the Craftsman. He’d been sitting here for ten minutes, as the LCD clock told him, debating just how he was going to tell his father and brother about this revelation. It was too much to hope that they’d gone to bed as it was too early.

There was no manual on how to deal with this. No self help book titled: ‘How to tell your loved ones you have superpowers’.

Deciding there was nothing else to do than to get it over with, he exited the vehicle and made his way up the walkway. “Dad?” he called, closing the front door behind him.

The sound of a newspaper shuffling, no doubt the crossword, told him they were in the living room. They said nothing as he came to sit across from them. Over the years, it had been learned that if you wanted Don to talk about work you couldn’t force him to.

Don scrubbed his hair and face with his hands. Finally, he took a deep breath and let it out, “You know how they are superheroes with special powers?” two heavy blinks and then two separate nods. “Well, what if it wasn’t fiction? What if it was real?”

Charlie gave him an incredulous look amidst his paper grading. “Don, what are you talking about? Superheroes are just that… fiction.”

He didn’t get a turn to answer or explain further.

Alan answered, quiet but firm. “Your brother’s not lying, Charlie.”

Don along with Charlie turned surprised eyes to the Eppes patriarch. ‘Wait… What?’ he thought. ‘That’s not what was supposed to happen.’

Both brothers talked at the same time, exploding with questions.

Alan smiled, sighed, then said calmly, "Your mother was special."
