the first place I felt brave enough to post a story.
And that in itself is cause for celebration. I know you're not the only one who was treated well and encouraged by this gentle community. As I peruse back through the years I see many names, now familiar, who started here.
Thanks so much for commenting and also for acknowledging the mods who started the ball rolling and kept it up for so many years. They did a great job and left the comm in capable hands.
sentinel_thurs was what brought me to LJ - it was the first community I joined here back in early 2004. As Laurie said, Mouse and Terri were the founders and they ran it for many years until Mab took it on. They got a lot of stick on the lists in the early days from people who thought that an influx of short stories was somehow destroying the fandom, but for those of us new to TS at that time it was a breath of fresh air, a place to write and share and make friends with people of like mind. I met many of my closest and longest standing LJ friends through sentinel_thurs.
I am so glad it is in Mab's safe hands now that Mouse and Terri have moved on to pastures new. She does a great job with it, and deserves tons of kudos for her evenhanded and consistent modding :-)
Isn't that always the way for pioneers -- they blaze the trail to new and exciting lands but in addition to the inevitable brambles have to deal with the naysayers. "The sky is falling!"
Well eight years later and the sky is still firmly in place. And I can't imagine TS without you and all the lovely authors who share your talent and energy with me and "the boys". Our fandom is much richer for the diversity, and Sen Thurs is a treasure trove.
Hey, thank you. :-) As others have pointed out, Turps and Castalie got things going, when they saw that LJ was going to be the next fannish 'thing'. I ended up posting there when elmyraemilie (my LJ enabler) encouraged me when I was just a little LJ newbie.
As Bev points out, apparently the idea of a flashfic community for short stories took a bit of time to develop traction in the wider fannish community, which is why the comm had a now defunct website for its stories. Some folks felt a bit uncomfortable posting in the then traditional spots. The site's still available but hasn't been updated in donkey's ages.
Sentinel Thursday is a quieter comm these days, but that's okay in one sense because it means that it's hardly a drain on my resources. *g* And as for time-keeping, that's what time converter sites are for.
Thanks again, m'dear. I have a stinking cold right now so your lovely post is a bit of a lift.
Oh I'm loving this post -- am getting a fannish history lesson! I'm also glad you mentioned the website. That's where I first saw Sen Thurs stories; well before I knew anything about LJ. Whether it's active or not, an archive is a precious thing, especially these days!
Well, bundle up and have a cuppa. Sending hugs for all you do at the ST LJ and for the TS community as a whole. Brava.
