I liked the beginning and your post war scenario - quite realistic and convincing.

I was particularly impressed with the use of rain. On a personal note, it rained like that when my dad died - that night and the day after. I was 13 and it is over 30 years ago now, but I remember thinking it made it look like the whole world was crying. Ok, this might have been TMI. But what I am trying to convey is the way you story captured that same feeling.
