I just wanted to mention something that I noticed coming up in my comments and on my international flist in general about prop 8. There are countries out there that support some sort of domestic partnership for homosexual couples. While it is a step forward, here in the states we generally do not accept that as an option (at least not within the ( Read more... )

Frankly, I think all mention of the word "marriage" should be stricken from any kind of legal documentation as the government does not certify marriages but civil unions. I think this should be across the board for same sex and different sex couples. Marriage is something the church officiates and I'm a big believer in the separation of church and state.

I agree with you and think straight people should be allowed to have civil partnerships in this country. I dunno, we don't have the same baggage with the whole "separate but equal" thing over here so maybe it wasn't so big a deal?

Marriage, if you're religious, is a sacrament... since I'm not, I should be having a civil partnership whatever the gender of the person I marry. Maybe it's because I'm not gay or religious that these names don't seem as important to me as the principle that two people of any gender can have their relationship legally recognised and publicly celebrated.

If marriage is only to be sanctioned by God, then it should apply to churchy stuffs only, and the rest of us married by judges, gay or straight, should have civil unions.

But exactly how is an arranged marriage between two people who don't know each other, or a marriage to strengthen two families and the girl needs a flock of freakin' goats to bribe the fella with, how is that possibly protecting the sanctity of marriage? How do people who binge drink then drive through the Elvis wedding chapel have more rights than a gay couple who've been committed to each other for a lifetime?
