Lucius came back into the room and saw that Rodolphus was deep in thoughts. He looked calm enough though, despite everything that had happened, and Lucius thought that was a good sign. He went over to the drinks cabinet and poured a glass of Cognac, then went over to his guest and held it out in front of the man's face.
Rodolphus accepted the glass and drank without looking at its contents, keeping his eyes on his benefactor. “Thank you for answering my call. Many would not have done so, even though they bear the Mark.” He looked down at the empty glass. “I know I have not yet done you any service that would warrant your aid. What would you have of me, Lucius, as payment for this debt?”
Lucius smiled faintly. It was certainly true that not that many would have come to Rodolphus' aid, at least not without first consulting the Dark Lord, given what it had been about. Bellatrix had always been fawning at Voldemort's feet, so of course, the Lord had a special interest in her...
"You were married to my wife's sister, Rodolphus. Practically family. I know that Bellatrix didn't always agree with my way of handling things, but I will not hold that against you." As for payment, Lucius had many things in mind, all longterm.
Rodolphus nodded in acknowledgement of their blood tie. “Your risks were more than the bonds of blood require. And even were we brothers, I would find a way to thank you.” Slanting a look up at Lucius, he continued, “With one of our Lord’s favorites gone, there will be a void that someone will need to fill.”
Lucius nodded slowly, as in thought. "The place held by Bellatrix was a special one. I doubt many people would be able to fill it." Lucius knew that he didn't want that 'special' place at Voldemort's feet. He preferred to think for himself. "I'm sure that our Lord will give his attentions to those that he deem worthy."
He continued to watch Rodolphus as he sat back in his own chair. The man was getting back his old good looks, even if the time spent in Azkaban had marked him. At least he was less gaunt, less tired, less empty these days. Lucius was sure there was still at least some holes waiting to be... filled in the man. Would such contact work in Lucius' favour, he wondered. It could be an easy way to forge a deeper bond between them, a natural way to make sure that Rodolphus trusted him.
