It's not really a squick. It's more like one of those tropes that I'm sick to death of*. I like mysteries brought on by human (mis)behavior - I don't want to find out they're caused by some pissed off prehistoric Irish goddess, y'know?

*I say this fully remembering I've indulged in this very trope myself. :-P
