Description: Magdeline Schellenberg was born on a farm in Germany and was raised under the care of her grandparents, her grandmother namely, due to her grandfather constantly tending the fields of his precious corn. Magdeline often perceived him as loving that corn more than he could love a human being, such was the devotion and care given to his crops. Magdeline’s parents were gone from her life before she even had the chance to walk; her mother was caught in machine gun fire when she wandered too close to the inner German border at the time of the Cold War, and her father nearly grieved himself to death over it. He fell ill with a sickness and passed soon after.
Her grandmother, whom she called Oma (German for “grandma”), was a woman of great beauty and strength, though her frail structure doubled with age caused her to ask for Magdeline’s frequent assistance in performing household chores. In return, Oma taught her everything she knew, but Magdeline found herself most taken by the English language. Oma had picked it up fairly quickly in the time that she had lived in Essex, England. Oma often told Magdeline the story of that time while they were busy with housework, of the wars she had lived through and the ordeals she had faced. Magdeline always cocked a friendly ear and let the words drench her mind. She might have been able to repeat the story to this day if it was asked of her. She remembered that it had all begun in 1905.
This was the year that her Oma was born. Of course, when the story was told, Oma would add in small, slight details before jumping ahead quite a bit. At the age of thirteen, she would say, the First World War had just spun its course, and Germany lost much of the territory it had gained from multiple conquests. Part of this land housed Oma’s family, she and her five brothers and sisters with their parents in a small, secluded home. They found their land taken, their house snatched, and were forcibly brought to England. There they were “civilized”, and taught the English language. The family remained there for twenty one years, until the start of World War II in 1939, when Adolf Hitler launched an invasion of Poland on September 1st. The British were discontent with the idea of having Germans in their territory due to the possibility that they might be spies. Oma’s family was once again forced into travel, although she was returning to her homeland.
At that time, Oma was thirty four, and had married a wealthy British man. They had settled down and produced a child when Oma was thirty one, who had been given a proper English name, June. When her husband realized that Oma had to return to Germany, he decided that he valued his wealth and reputation over his wife and child, and on the day that Oma was to leave England, he did not go with her. Heartbroken, Oma and June went back to Germany with her mother and father. June was three years old at the time of their departure.
Oma remarried six years later to a man by the name of Claus Heistermann in 1945, when June was only nine and just as WWII was coming to a close. June grew to be a fine young woman, and eventually married a veteran German soldier, Hans-Peter Schellenberg, shedding her maiden name to adopt his own name. In 1975, they had a single child, Magdeline, a bright young specimen who spent countless hours breaking apart her trinkets and pasting them back together again. After her parents’ death when she was but the age of two, Magdeline grew under the protection of Oma. With age came wisdom, and stubbornness. The death of her Oma on Magdeline’s twelth birthday affected her deeply, and she grew defiant against her grandfather. He refused to weep for his wife and contented in sitting in the cornfields day after day, but it seemed almost as though he never grieved. Of course, Magdeline mourned enough for the both of them. By the age of fifteen, Magdeline had made herself a protective shield of defensive words, and her emotion was callused over. In due time, Magdeline realized what it was that had brought upon the death of her parents. Perhaps this knowledge is what feeds her rebellious spirit, because she has always been one to brush up against society the wrong way.
