The amygdala is an almond sized section of the brain that controls our fight or flight responses.  You know when you feel that instant shot of adrenalin and you have an immediate reaction to something you perceive as a threat...that's our little amygdala at work.

i remember one night i was laying there in that state where you're almost asleep but not quite there yet and i heard this *plop* on the pillow right beside me...

reaching over i switched on the lamp, only to find one of those quite large, hairy, 8 legged beasts rearing up at me... barely inches from my face...

a quick brush with my hand sent him sprawling, thudding against the wall, with me pouncing upon the poor unsuspecting thing with the nearest weapon at hand... a 1,000 page book by Steven King!

what a way to go, eh? lol
