Yeah, it's a much better game if you're reading the notebook constantly.
As a matter of fact I think I would have advised the authors to make notebook lookup automatic, it's so critical a part of the story. In other words, any time the player examines something, if the notebook has something to say, append the notebook information with a bit about how Robin scans the book for information, etc.
This would still leave some room for the player to decide how much secondary lookup to do -- e.g., do you want to check out the names of various characters who come up in a passage? But it would reduce the chances of people having a sub-optimal experience with the game, and also reduce the number of keystrokes required for people who *are* doing the lookup every time they run across something.
