Sounds like Beginnings that was once posted to a Chris and Mary website. As far as I know that website and story no longer exist.

I don't have my external hard drive with me, but I'll check and see if I have it on it.

Omg, I read this story a long time ago but that is the one! I printed it out but lost my hard copy of it. I never thought to check archive.org, then again I didn't remember the title or the name of the author.
