Just read The Cure by J Brooks - excellent story, well worth a read - and it brought to mind a story where Ezra was responsible for getting medicine to the town but he gets bushwhacked on the way.

Even though it isn't the story you were looking for, Fevers by Sue Bartholomew has a similar premise and I couldn't miss the opportunity to pimp such a great story.
