Not just great-grandma's braided rag rug, but my whole soon-to-be ROOM smells like dog urine. I'm going to have to get the pros in to clean the whole thing. I'd rent a Bissell myself but I know how hard it is to get pet urine out of a carpet, and I don't want the smell rising up to haunt me some dark and stormy night

I'm afraid you are right, the pros are going to have to take care of this. I'll ask the neighbors and check the "diamond certified" type ratings and have some professionals shampoo the carpet before I move my future bed (Victorian four-poster! w00t!) and own rugs in there. I had a feeling that a rented Bissell just wouldn't cut it. (This is why many landlords don't accept pets - clean up after your pet, people!).
The house has always had carpet so I think it's subflooring of some kind. I know it never used to be hardwood. I hope to dear sweet Hestia that nothing has seeped through to the subflooring, otherwise I'm going to have a dandy old time getting the stink out.
