Julie and Julia and food, glorious food

I saw "Julie and Julia" the other day. It's awesome. Go watch it - if nothing else for the amazingly talented Meryl Streep fooling you into thinking she really is Julia Child. And prepare to be hungry afterwards ( Read more... )

You don't have to boil lobsters alive. You can kill them quickly by severing their neural cord with a sharp narrow knife inserted at the seam between head and thorax just before cooking.

Ming Tsai made a foie gras creme brulee on Iron Chef and D and I were both like, "I'd try that!"

That's good to know! I just hope that if I ever do try that on a lobster, I don't miss the mark and wind up hacking the poor thing to death like a lobster serial killer. OTOH, I do love lobster...I just hate to kill it...big ol' wuss, that's me!

I had pate once - don't know if it was foie gras or just plain ol' pate - and I say it's liver, and I say to hell with it! Still, lots of people think it's delish - and I love and adore mangoes, which some people don't understand. My cat loves cat food and I just don't know what she sees in it either. :D

1) I don't want to deal with live lobsters. Yes, I know I'm a hypocrite because I wear leather, eat bacon, etc. But I'm a big wuss. I don't want to kill my own food. Especially by boiling it alive.

I get that. Every summer my family steams crabs (in beer, not that it makes it much better), and while they're tasty, I still think that's a pretty nasty way to go.

I suppose, if one HAD to be steamed to death, it would be more fun to be killed via beer than plain water or something. Still, I don't think I could do it.

I totally agree with you on all counts. I can't even imagine chicken liver custard. I guess it would be sort of like... nope, can't do it.

I love you!

I think Snape would serve chicken liver custards in detention. As punishment. heheh

As part of his secret competition with Dumbledore, to see who can cook their way through Julia Child first? I can totally see that.

BTW, I found that I can gross my mom out (to the point where she pleads with me to STFU) by saying "Chicken liver custards! Chicken liver custards!"

Heh. It was at this point that it occurred to me that you can sing "chicken liver custards" to the tune of "I Am the Walrus". And now I'll probably be doing it all day. XP

My cat, Stella, was totally the opposite. She liked to kill her own food but she wouldn't eat it. She'd leave the dead mice, birds and insects for ME to clean up (and occassionally step on. EW EW EW).
