The dogs do that all the time. It's literally *steamy* outside, it must be about 90 degrees, everything is nasty and you feel like you're going to melt... and they're all basking in the biggest sunbeam they can find, like a bunch of overgrown, furry lizards.

Most modern self-tanners don't leave you orange or dirty-looking. It would be a good idea to find a good shop with qualified staff to ask, though.
I took an airbrush tan last year. Maybe that would be a solution for you?

Jergens Natural Glow moisturizer. Gradual color and they have one for people with fair skin. (like me!)

I'm a fair red head, so I have to be careful about what I use or I won't look natural. Jergens Natural Glow is the best stuff I've ever used. It smells funny, though, so I use it at night before bed, and then I take a shower in the morning.

YESSS! Jergens Natural Glow has worked wonderfully for me, too. I have very fair skin and freckle easily, so I don't go into the sun at all (which is loads of fun in AZ), but the fact that my legs look like cooked chicken was getting to me. ;)

The Jergens one works gradually, and has a formulation for fair skin. It's awesome.

BTW -- Luna, our kitty-girl (who suffers from Supermodel Syndrome: absolutely gorgeous, but neurotic as hell), is going for the opposite effect. She's taken to sleeping between the rear wheels of my car and the garage. Apparently, she has decided that it's WAY too damn hot. LOL
