Reaping the crop

Just five days ago I posted some photos of my broccoli plants.  This afternoon when I got home from work I looked at them and found one was starting to flower!  Literally - about 4-5 yellow flowers had opened.  It was time to pick them.

I had already cut the flowering head before taking this photo of the others.

Augh, that last photo is making me hungry! The broccoli looks so fresh and crisp. Do you cook the greens as well?

I hope you've eaten by now! I can assure you the meal was very enjoyable! :)

The broccoli certainly couldn't have been any fresher! No, I don't cook the greens. To tell you the truth, I've never really thought about it. I suppose that's because we usually buy fresh broccoli cut so there's just the head and stalk - but no leaves. Then if I buy it frozen, they're cut into florets.

Oh, it looked lovely! And your dinner looked scrumptious. But I would have cooked the leaves, too, they looked so fresh.

Thank you! I was really surprised that they had reached flowering point so quickly. Broccoli usually grow into dense heads that would provide food for a couple of meals each. We ate the whole four in one meal! I'm hoping the side shoots will grow well with extra fertiliser so that we can have at least one more meal out of them.

I'll have to try cooking the leaves next time!

Maybe the size of the broccoli heads is particular to the cultivars?

That's possible. I'll have to have a closer look at the tag that was in the seedling punnet.

I've had a busy day today. The long-neglected job of garden-weeding has begun. I've just done one garden bed, and all the "proper" plants in it will get a chance to grow now! Hopefully next weekend we'll get more fine weather so that I can do the rest of the weeding.
