I'm ambivalent about the new wave of Torture Porn type horror. I didn't like the remake of Texas Chainsaw, which reminded me too closely of the serial killer texts I was reading for class at the time. I haven't really seen any of the latest wave of horror - I pretty much taper off at the early 90s when I was studying film and doing a lot of coursework specicifically on horror and violence.

What I have seen - even supposedly "intellegent" films like The Ring - is that it seems more violent and graphic than even some of the most grotesque 70s and 80s films, where even in the original TCM, there was a lot of suggestion.

Have you read Carol Clover's "Men, Women and Chainsaws"? Unless it's been updated, it's probably 20 years old at this point, but I loved that book back in the day.
