Dreamwidth? Also, a new school year

Sep 22, 2013 16:35

I am typing this in Dreamwidth, which tells me my paid account is lapsing in a week or so. I am not sure why I have paid for DW. I do not think I will continue to do so. I will have fewer icons. So what. I can change them to what I want in LJ. I guess I will continue to post here, just so I have a back-up if the untrustworthy Russian carcass ( Read more... )

I knew this would be hard, sigh. I want something that I can influence the looks of -- put up a background, post changing photos of student work, etc -- and ideally something that would allow discussions, even if they were just comment streams like LJ's. I mean, that would be good, to have nested comment streams. I have to be able to moderate and control the discussions, of course, and the students have to be identifiable (within that private community) for safety reasons. I also want to be able to have annotated links to things like BiblioNasium, Lumosity, Dictionary.com (and its vocab game, WordDynamo, etc.) Agh, it all sounds so fun to me. I mean, obvs. kids explore the internet all the time, but apart from geeking out on YouTube and FB, I don't know what educational opportunities they pause on. Why doesn't that one site let you preview how it will look??

Hahaha... yes, well, I read a lot. And, to be fair, I'm not reading Kant and Hegel, for damn sure. Also: looking at the ratios on Goodreads, I am REreading about 2 to 1, maybe even a bit higher... No, I think it's two to one. 117 books are on a shelf "First Time Reads", and the rest are just on the "2013" shelf. I always knew I read a lot, and this has been an enjoyable way to keep track of it. SO FAR, Amazon has not somehow cannibalized it.

That seems like an inhuman amount of work. I'm exhausted right now with a class of 27 (my cap is 22, and I have 20 working computers that the kids can't necessarily log into because the network has been haywire for the first three weeks of school).

So, I sent you what we use for a class website. Hopefully it's helpful.

Wow, your job just sounds completely brutal. It doesn't sound like there's much they aren't allowed to foist upon you with no notice.
