Oh my GOD, I FINALLY figured it out!
I gave blood today at the blood drive at work (my iron was excellent, by the way). I didn't get lightheaded, I didn't pass out, it was awesome. Best donation ever.
So I was sitting on the bench at the end of the bloodmobile, listening to WFNK The Frank Classic Rock radio station. And I have a mini Chips Ahoy almost in my mouth when... the classic strains of BETTER MAN starts playing over the radio.
I'M NOT FUCKING KIDDING. And I'm like, "what does this mean? Someone in this Bloodmobile is the Better Man?"
I'm all freaked out, but I finish my cookies and juice and walk into the building. There's this meeting thing that I have to go to - I am still a Floor Lead, after all. And Uncle Jean's in the presentation, and the end of the presentation is, I kid you not, six department leaders wearing really bad costumes singing a song about Ease and Speed of Checkout to "YMCA."
It was hilarious and sad at the same time.
So I walk out, hoping to run into Uncle Jean, because I haven't had a chance to talk to him about the fact that I'm still a Floor Lead. And BossMan walks into the cubicle and tells me that Peter's my new boss because Jean is moving to Customer Service.
...
That's right, folks, Uncle Jean is not my boss for the time being. He is taking a position in Customer Service as a supervisor - it's a lateral move, he keeps his salary, and best of all, he's not in Men's anymore.
This is an excellent thing - for him. He was getting so beaten down emotionally and the thought of coming into work was almost killing him; he needed a change more than I need a change.
The bad part is that it's a temporary position: he'll only be in that position through September. But a lot can happen in September; who knows where he'll end up in three months?
But then there's the part where Peter is now an (also temporary) Assistant Manager for the Men's Department, and therefore, my boss. Whatevs.
The worse part is that now, technically, BossMan has only two Floor Leads: Flexo and Eric. So when I'm not in Training, I'll be getting extra hours in Men's (which I was doing already), and answering to Peter. And I'm not sure how I feel about that... If Peter's the one that writes my review, I'm ... protesting.
Anyway. The point, bringing about the Eddie Vedder connection and stuff. Right.
When I heard "Better Man" in the Bloodmobile? Jean was being offered his new position at the same time.
Don't you see? Uncle Jean is the Better Man. But unlike
what the psychic said, I'm not going to be in a relationship with him because, GROSS WRONG HORRIBLE HORRIBLE IDEA yada yada.
But what else could it be? I can't believe that the "Better Man" is supposed to be Peter.
Or maybe -- maybe -- maybe Eddie's trying to tell me that the 'man I'm with' (if I'm the "she" in the lyrics) is the Men's Department, and I can't find a 'better man' (i.e., department) to get into.
Damn, I gotta get outta Men's.
So that's the story: Uncle Jean's the Better Man (or whatever), he's got a new job, I probably won't see much of him anymore, and Peter's my new boss.
But at least I can listen to Pearl Jam without freaking out anymore. Right?
Right?
