This weekend I was watching an episode of How I Met Your Mother (HIMYM) and I got up to do something, I look back, and my monitor is blank. OK. Maybe the computer is asleep. No. OK, maybe the monitor cord came loose. It happened with my wireless NIC the other day, so why not? Nope. OK, reboot... my monitor receives no signal ( Read more... )

If you're willing to drop a little extra on your laptop, you can get a new keyboard for it (to make it less ghetto). I bought one for mine (from Dell) for like $15 after I taught mine why it wanted to make my CS projects work by smashing my fist into it... (The builtin laptop keyboard)

I found out I use my desktop pretty rarely. I use my laptop for work too, and its about 4 years old....

I wouldn't worry too much about the same underlying problem thing causing the new one to break though, I would be willing to bet it was just a bad motherboard...

So for the sake of cheap I'd say go with the laptop, RAM is cheap, the HD enclosures are cheap too (Watch out for the one's at fry's, they're usually a little more expensive). So ya, I think thats what I'd do if I were you

I agree with my esteemed colleague above. If you don't really use your desktop for anything besides hardcore super gaming, you can accomplish all of the same tasks on a laptop with less of a headache and more of the portability. I'm all for upgrading your laptop. :)

Thanks for the input, guys. I decided not to fix any of my computers and instead use the money I WOULD have spent on the computers on a new puppy.

I kid, I kid. Though, if I thought Michael would let me have a puppy, puppy >>>>>>>>>>>>> than a frigging electronic ALWAYS.

After y'alls comments, talking with Michael, Brian, Justin, Robby, Heather, Kari, Zac, Katy, Chris, Kris, David G, J, T and David Azn, I've decided to fix up the lappy (I am really paranoid about making an ill informed decision, especially when it involves more than a few bucks, and I know soooo many people with worthy tech opinions).

Today I bought 2 1GB sticks of ram for my lappy, and a 1TB external HD. All I need now is to get all that set up and wipe my lappy/reinstall windows. Oh, and find a damn ';' button for my keyboard. Or get a new one. I dunno.
