Silence Your Brain, Or Ramp It Up

A few weeks ago Laurie wanted to attend a Quakers meeting and asked me if I'd like to come along. I did, having been interested in the Quakers for a long time but never having attended one of their meetings - I am curious if nothing else, and that was a good enough reason for me. Plus I suspected I might get a lot out of it. And also, the meeting ( Read more... )

I had one of the strongest spiritual experience of my life in my 20s when I set foot in a Quaker meeting. Turns out my small still voice is neither small nor still. It wasn't about silencing the background chatter so much as my conscious consent to allow that SSV to speak to me, probably the first time I'd ever done it. (Some would point out that the background chatter can be exactly about drowning out whatever we are trying NOT to hear ourselves say.)

That said, I do altered states easily and well.

There does seem to be something about Quaker meetings . . .

I can slip in and out of any story (or whatever else) I'm writing easily, but I can't say I've had much luck with other such things.

It might be worthwhile looking into mindfulness. I've never been into most relaxation techniques mostly for that reason: brain wants to run off and think about interesting things, not leaves floating down rivers. But we had a demonstration of mindfulness at the adult asperger's group last month and it seemed useful. Possibly because the brain is diverted into thinking about what the body is experiencing which is part of the process rather distracting from it. Not to say it wasn't trying to go off elsewhere, but I could see with practice how it might be quietened if not totally silence.

Mindfulness is something I definitely need to work on. It seems to elude me unless I'm being "mindful" of a current story or poem.
