New Words: 950 on chapter 6 ("The Defenders, 1860") of Shenandoah. Most of the soldiers of the First Virginia Brigade are still at that early point where they think war is all romance, glory, and chivalry.

Total Words: 175200.

Reason For Stopping: Research break.

I'm glad you like it--and feeling like you've been transported back in time is always my #1 mark of a good historical story, so that's one big thing I've been shooting for in writing Shenandoah.

Alas, the entire opening passage above has been cut now. I'd originally thought that the U.S. armory at Harper's Ferry was taking after a bit of shelling by Col. Jackson's artillery--I'm not the only one who thought this actually--but came to discover that the Virginia militia took it before he got there. Ah well.
