Memorial Day, Not Exactly Belated

May 30, 2008 12:38

Today is the traditional date of Memorial Day--when it was first celebrated shortly after the Civil War. Since I wasn't able to get online during the day that it was actually celebrated this year, I figure I'll post this now.

If there's one thing that doing genealogy has shown me, it's that my family has a long, long history of serving in wartime ( Read more... )

I think any such tribute would be done well just by its nature. :)

Lovely post. Well timed, too. Our weekly newspaper, because we don't have enough news here for a daily, had a sad article about how few people turned out for the Memorial Day service. I didn't even know there was one, and I've lived here since '00. The photo was sad, showing a priest and a few old men dressed in their dignity and uniforms.

As far as I know, the only person on either side of my family who's served is my father, who rushed in to enlist with everyone else during WWII. I haven't been able to find out much about the Irish or Swedish side.

My grandfather was in the AAF during WWII, too (they changed it from the AAC to the Army Air Forces in 1941, though I like AAC better), and like your uncle, didn't see combat. My gf was a Weights-and-Balances Officer in the 10th A.F. in India, balancing the loads of the C-46s and C-47s going over the Hump into China. What did your uncle do?

Nice to meet you. My husband, Lendall Dee Archer, M.D. and my children are your relatives. I was looking at the will of Henry Switzer in the 1792 Will Book of Botetourt County, Virginia and typed his name in Google. If you want a copy of the will, e-mail me at ldarcher@msn.com. Also have a picture of Emma Switzer--she fits in somewhere.

Sincerely,
Linda Archer

Yes I would like that--somehow I've managed to miss it all this time!
