Just finished rewatching all 8 episodes of New Amsterdam on hulu.com. And Firefly fans think FOX screwed their show over? It still holds up, and I really wish it had lasted longer OR attracted more of a fandom.
Johann Van Der Zee stops a fellow Dutch soldier from killing a Lenape woman, and is run through. In return, the shaman grants him immortality...he won't grow old or die until he meets his soulmate. Now John Amsterdam is a cop. He has a heart attack on a subway platform after chasing a suspect, and assumes the ER doctor who stopped to help him is The One. But he's been wrong before.
I just...loved the show. Unlike Highlander, John has kids and has to outlive them, there's even a joking reference to Highlander (I've been shot, stabbed, strangled.... What if someone cut off your head? That...hasn't happened yet.)and also John isn't a plaster saint in the flashbacks like Duncan. He's kind of a jerk at times, but aren't we all? And he's learning.
I love the fact that he's been taking a photo of Times Square every year since cameras are invented. That he was a cabinetmaker famous in antiques circles and when he needs extra cash he 'forges' a desk. That he always has a rotweiller, numbered instead of named.
