I went to Japan alone twice (to study and then to teach) but it's not impossible to make friends, especially thanks to the internet and also since you have niche interests (for example, meeting people at lives). So it's scary, but not un-doable. And totally worth it! I always thought "I want to live in Japan forever!" but I got fed up after not quite 2 years; but I know people who thought the same thing and are still there, or people who just took the job teaching for the sake of having a job, and they're still there. You never know. What I did learn from that experience is that I'd really like to visit as many places as I possibly can. Even though I still love Japan, my view has expanded and I love a lot of other places too.
