I'm so excited for you!!! |D You know, the little kids probably only say that because they haven't seen many black people. I would take that opportunity to say hello or something and bow and then you might impress them with your excellent manners, even for a foreigner! :) Although I don't know if saying hello and bowing is rude if you don't know the person...I actually know little about Japanese customs and etiquette. Still though, you're so nice and always smiling that I'm sure they've all gotten a good impression, however brief. :)
I'm glad you got a bicycle and I know exactly what you mean about feeling like you've accomplished something. Every time I find a new little section of Athens it excites me because I feel more knowledgable, and therefore more self-empowered. It sounds like a good thing like your roommate is leaving, I hope you get another one who's awesome! Take care of yourself lady.
