Tank: Wanna hear a joke?
Me: Sure!
Tank: Mashed Potato!
[beat]
Me: ... uh ... mashed potato who?
Tank: Mashed potato, Auntie Aster! Mashed potato! *gales of laughter*

elf and tank, random, tiny people

To a 5-year-old, that's comedy gold!

You think that's good? Try just this single word out on them: rutabaga.

When I was little, I apparently used to run up to my family members and say the following:

"Wanna hear a secret?"
"...uh, sure."
"...rice and beans."
"..."

I absolutely love that milestone. When I taught pre-K, I loved it when kids hit the nonsensical knock-knock joke phase. They know jokes are funny and that knock-knock jokes are an easy formula to play with, but they have no clue how they work. Sometimes they can't even tell the "joke" they are laughing so much. Little kid jokes are the best. My favorite, "Ask me if I'm a tree."
