Spring! Thought! Kind of!

I love spring. I'm half tempted to run aroud with a camera documenting anything light green or pink, it's so good to see those colors again. Have an edge of sore throat, but otherwise pretty happy with the world. Took the insulation off my windows and opened them up for a while when I got home today. Breeze in my room felt nice ( Read more... )

We are finally having days nice enough to be outside more than half an hour but of course my 2 hour outdoor study session means now my throat is killing me. The trade off was still probably worth it, i needed sun.

also Octavia butler is cool, have you read the parable books, they make you think but are also good entertainment? I can't wait till finals are over and I can read what I want again.

Yay for not painful to be outside! madmoisellestar April 17 2008, 12:44:53 UTC
I was shocked when I visited mom last week how far behing the seasons there are - we drove from the first month of spring right into the last month of winter.

I kind of love Octavia Butler. She has that perfect mix - entertainment weight and texture with a little bit of thought-provoking crunch around the edges. I've just started Parable of the Sower - really liking it. I read Kindred and Flegling before and I'd recommend both.

I love the first three Kushiels, but I haven't gotten past those. In fact, I need to find my copies of them because it is about time for a reread.

Rice has everything to do with hardware and technique. I have a pan that I've taken the time to figure out (it involves wrapping the lid in foil), and I can usually get a pretty good bowl of rice on the cook-top. Different types of rice also need different treatment - I usually do better with jasmine rice than sushi rice. (since i've left my big bag of jasmine rice at ty's apartment since epic weekend, i've been admittedly a little sad ( ... )

Why do I not have a food and cooking icon? madmoisellestar April 17 2008, 12:50:24 UTC
I've been getting better and better about taking a scientific approach to cooking - it really does make the difference. But rice still eludes me. Possibly because I have crap for pans, possibly bcause I have this stubborn sense that rice is simple food and so it should be simple to cook, and so clearly, no matter how dry or gooey this batch was, surely I will get it right without a lot of effort next time. This is why I own a rice cooker. I know there's no magic to them, but they protect the rice from me.

I have been assured by many sources (all in like the last two weeks, oddly enough) that I will love Alton Brown. Alas, youtube really doesn't work on my computer (at home or work). So dvds, please yes lots.

Actually, The Pope closed my office, so running around with a camera documenting anything light green or pink is pretty much what I'll be doing today.
