Hailing??? It's cloudy here, but no rain, no hail. Just talked to someone next to BWI, and he says they have a "monsoon" going on. What is up with this weather????
Well. When a warm low pressure zone and a cooler high pressure zone fall in love, they find a high humidity region. Then the cool high pressure zone puts its front under the low pressure zone. This is called "making weather". And if they do it just right, the humidity is forced up into the low pressure zone where it forms ice particulates.
Yeah, it did cool off nicely. But remember: hail is mostly a summer thing. We get sleet in the winter, but for sleet to turn into hail it's gotta be bounced back into the high altitudes by the warm air updraft, several times.
On an intellectual level, I understand this. On a visceral level, I was outside three hours ago and it was broiling and now there are pieces of actual ICE hitting my window! It's just not right!

And that is how hail storms are made.
