The late '50s and early '60s are popular this year with TV producers, following in the success of "Mad Men," with offerings from BBC America ("The Hour"), NBC ("The Playboy Club") and ABC "Pan Am."
If anyone's curious about "The Hour", I really can't recommend it highly enough. It's much less a "60's show" or a "news show" than an "espionage show" - like the screenwriter says, the time period is more a framing device for the events of the conspiracy. The cast is brilliant (Grown-up Ben Whishaw! Gorgeous Dominic West! Plucky Romola Garai! Awesome Anna Chancellor!), the writing is excellent, and it just gets better every episode you watch.
Thanks for that suggestion! I'm already planning to try Pan-Am, but I never heard of 'The Hour'. It sounds really interesting. I just feel bad that I already missed the starting date! Will have to search for it online...
I'm actually really interested in Playboy Club and Pan-Am. Playboy Club looks like it has a neat murder-mystery bent, and Pan-Am simply because I had family who worked there when I was a kid.
They're so full of shit; they're obviously riding MM's coattails. And what they mean by seeking larger audiences is that the shows (at least the American ones) will doubtless be less intelligent. The Playboy Club in particular makes me gag because from the promos it seems that, instead of pointing to the sexism of the times, they're saying being a bunny gave you some kind of special power. Ugh. I've been rolling my eyes over both that and Pan Am since I first heard about them.
But that's the cycle of TV. Something's successful, and it gets imitated to death (see also: all the crappy Lost wannabes).
I live in DC and visited the Air and Space Museum with my cousin when she visited and saw them in there, obviously. They're going to be everywhere now once the show airs.
