That's not surprising. They really were very instrumental in earlier years, and the instrumental side has always been at least as important as the vocal. You weren't really incorrect.

Yes, I was struck by that as I re-listened, there is a lot of long expanses of instrumental noodling about and musical exploration, which is quite enjoyable.
