The source of the "crisis" quote is generally attributed to Machiavelli (rather than Confucius), with the beclouding detail being that nobody can seem to find something specifically along those lines (as translated from the Italian) in any of his books. It certainly sounds like Machiavelli, particularly in context of The Prince, but this "tone" (again, as filtered through translation) might be the primary cause of it being annotated as his.

Well, it does sound like Machiavelli's mean-world realpolitik and, as you say, maybe that's why it has been attributed to him. I have seen quotes migrate from one source to another over the course of years. However, as far as the quote actually beginning with Machiavelli? I had to study the guy a little for my majors. I feel the quote is just a hair too sophisticated for him ( ... )
