There are probably thousands of advanced civs out there, a few who know about us. Those who can space-travel, or monitor us, are more advanced with us, and not something for us to mess with. "Evil" is not unique to our planet - mortality and fear are everywhere.

Yes, we do have serious problems here, which look like they will never end. When things start looking better, along comes some new movement, full of raucous dweebs, advocating reckless selfishness, or whatever.

With our eternal need to be jerkwad apes, playing footsy with aliens will eventually lead to disaster for us - and that is what Stephen Hawking, etc., are warning.
