The local news reports did tell us what algal blooms were, and what is causing them. They specifically said it was from chemical runoff from people fertilizing their lawns, golf courses, etc. But either way, we're to blame.

But I'll be damned if my FB feed wasn't blowing up with conspiracy theories about this. Because actually admitting we're ignorant, and solely responsible for the degradation of our ecosystem, though we've been proven wrong countless times, is clearly out of the question, amirite?
