Comfort writing

Oct 11, 2010 18:05

I had a moment today. It's one of those things that's almost impossible to write about without sounding pretentious or like I'm trying to manufacture a deep pithy moment so I seem like someone who has moments like that instead of what I am, which is a regular person who yells at the screen during Project Runway and obsesses over finding the ( Read more... )

I'd love to see you finish Third. And I wish I was "writerly" enough (see what I mean?) to help you figure it out, but I'm not. I suppose it really is on your shoulders, ultimately, to figure out what story you are trying to tell and how to tell it.

Comfort writing can serve a purpose, so don't discount it. I've been known to retreat into the realm of comfort writing when the "real life writing" aka, the writing that pays the bills, has screeched to a halt or seems impossible or it seems as if I've lost the joy in this thing I love to do.

Comfort writing allows me to rediscover the joy. To write without conscious thought, because sometimes, that's just what we need to do.

And then comes that moment when you're inspired to go back to the other. I'm glad it's happened for you.

I'm glad to hear you're at work on Third again. That reminds me; I need to get back to my commentary that I was going to write for you on Third. I've been so busy with school and life and shit that I haven't touched the Third Comments file in about two months.

I doubt you're writing crap.

And as fashionista_35 said, comfort writing has its place.

I relate to this a lot. I'm trying to get serious about writing goals, and have been thinking about this very thing. Good food for thought!

If there's an LJ equivalent of the facebook "Like", I would Like this post ten times over. It's not at all a pretentious douchebag thing to find sudden inspiration in works of art that exemplify the best of the medium in which you're also working. Thanks for sharing this moment -- and believe it or not, your blog posts are themselves an inspiration to some of us! :)
