In my workplace cafeteria there's always a deli station where you can get whatever kind of sandwich you want on whatever bread, etc etc, but each week they do a couple of specialty sandwiches that they wrap up for the fridge case. I'm told the upside down tomato things are HEAVY and hard to hang up once they are full.

I'd suggest a five gallon bucket and a bag of potting soil, personally, but that's because that's what I'm doing this year. :P

Lor,

Mom is going to do one of those upside down tomato plants this year too. We talked with a lady at the store who has done them before, and she told us that as far as she was concerned, the most important thing was that the plant be watered AT LEAST twice a day. She also said that you need to plant it in some type of water control potting soil, such as Miracle Grow With Moisture Control.

We'll have to compare notes as the season progresses.

D'oh! I haven't seen all of the West Wing yet! Spoiled! Just kidding. Right now Donna is recovering from her accident, and they've been dropping hints for like 5 seasons now, so it's happening soon I'm guessing.

and the sandwich sounds really good.

The only thing I've heard about the upside down hangy tomato plants is that they take a lot longer to grow and ripen. I keep thinking about them, I have a nice spot on my porch.

eee something I can comment on definitely! Do not get the upside down tomato thing, its not big enough to grow tomatoes in. The awesome gardening podcast I listen to all the time (gestalt gardener) says that tomatoes need a minimum of 5 gallons to grow in. They have pretty beefcake root systems. However, what he suggests is a 5 gallon paint bucket, like what you buy at Lowes, and drill holes in the bottom for drainage. That's what he grows all his tomatoes and peppers in. He says if you want to make it pretty, spray paint the paint bucket before planting in it. I love him ;) Also suggested is to get several tomato plants, several paint buckets, and you can make a teepee to train the plants up by putting one stake in each, sitting them all by each other and tying the top off. Hope this helps!
