The owl lights are huge-scale replicas of our Bryn Mawr lanterns. Each student receives one her freshman year at a special nighttime ceremony during which no words are spoken, only our Greek college hymns are sung. The lanterns are given to us by sophomores and represent the light of knowledge being passed to us from our older sisters and from the college. Most of us consider our lanterns one of our most prized possessions; I know I do. There are four colors. My class's lanterns are green, the colors rotate through as people graduate, obv.
I have thought a number of times that you would have loved Bryn Mawr. You would have fit right in and the college loooooooves women like you who get up in faces and...well, do what Gaga's doing in your icon.
Here's a photo of the actual lanterns: http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=4287947&l=bafbbe1991&id=603023084 This was taken on Lantern Night when Amy and I had just received our lanterns. We use them at Step Sing, which we have at each of our four yearly traditions. The first is right as classes start but we don't get our lanterns until October, so at that first sing we just have candles while the upperclassmen have lanterns. You always come away from that step sing reeeeeeeally wanting your lantern, like, now.
Hello! Evidently they thought it would make loading faster. Go to the Journal Header. At the bottom it says Journal Style. Scroll to the bottom of the page, it will say "Customize Selected Theme." That page will let you select the number of entries on a page. Hope that helps!!

Your entry failed to load for me a number of times, as well - probably due to LJ's move this weekend. LJ's status page for May 30th says:LiveJournal is currently in the process of moving its office, which will result in intermittent site slowness and difficulty accessing certain specific journals or page. These difficulties may continue throughout the weekend. We apologize for the inconvenience.
