I think I mentioned I had lunch with an old friend last Saturday. The friend was Dale, who used to be my general manager when I worked at Borders. He came to the store shortly after I did, in the summer of 2000, and was still there when I left (he's no longer there, or with the company). Needless to say we shared a lot of fond and not so fond ( Read more... )

*bursts out laughing* Do I even want to hear about the Borderline Inappropriate Massaging Couple? (btw, teh icon is directed towards customers, not you)

Having worked both in retail AND the food service industry throughout high school and college, and later as a "customer service specialist" in a call center, I have heard so many iterations of that phrase, LO THESE MANY YEARS.

And now I finally have a job where I don't have to interact with customers at all. IT IS AMAZING.

The one 'people' business in which the managers will side with the employees most of the time is the hotel business. People will try to get away with things that really would cost the hotel money (like smoking in a room) and the mangers rarely stand for any BS. They will slap a charge on a room in a heart beat if you smoke or destroy something and then they will escort you out if you bitch too much.

I can so relate. This is why I started working in an optical lab 16 years ago. I HATE/LOATHE/DETEST working in customer service/retail. In fact, i'm not even sure if any of those three words are strong enough for the way I feel about it.

I can relate. I work in a bookstore, and I hate it when customers are completely oblivious to the embarrassment of everyone around them or they tell me about their personal life while I help them find a book. I mean, there's a difference between being free and unashamed and making other people want to crawl into a hole.

During my shift last night a man with a boner walked up to me and asked where we keep the kama sutra books with the "good pictures." FML.

"Everyone should have to work for a year in either food service or retail." Amen! I've worked in food service for almost 20 years and the amount of crap I've had to put up with (and that I've witnesses others having to put up with) is unbelievable.

But then, one of the nicest things anyone ever did for me happened when I had a coughing that wouldn't stop while I was in a Waldenbooks...all of a sudden the manager was at my side with a little cup of water. Such a sweetheart, it kept me from coughing up a lung or something.
