So, I got my first mostly-negative review, but it's one that's easy to deal with, because it's purely a reader-dealbreaker consideration

Maybe the problem is that she didn't get far enough into it? I mean once we find out he's been working for the feds, everything changes, doesn't it? At least for me and my perception of his character. (Though i am only halfway done with the book now.)
you'll always run into someone who has a negative review. At least they weren't nasty about it. And it would be pretty boring if everyone liked the same thing.
I have to say that from my pov D is a very fascinating character. professional killers don't have a conscience, no redeeming qualities. At least I don't think you can be a cold-blooded killer and have a conscience.
D is different, his motives for getting into that life are different. And if you stick around long enough in the story to really SEE that the man has a story, that he is human and after his decision not to kill Jack he goes through a change. His world changes because Jack came into his life.
He was one of those rare people (in that line of work) who can be redeemed.
I loved D because he is a complex character and he and Jack fit so well together because they compliment each other
(there you can add me into the percentage of people on the positive side :D)
She's entitled to her opinion I guess, but I can't say that I agree with her... I'm in love with D and one of the reasons is that he's so complex and dark. makes him more attractive imo.
