Remembrances of winter

As much as this time of year, and storms like today's, bring out the weather-griping in everyone, not excepting myself, when it comes down to it...I like winter. I don't mind the cold ( Read more... )

Last year one of our local tv stations was giving away t-shirts that read, "It's Buffalo. It snows. Deal with it." I *so* wanted one.

People always ask us, "Isn't it COLD there?" To which we respond, "We moved here from Massachusetts and before that we were in Minnesota. Buffalo is WARM." "But you get so much snow!" "Yeah, but [usually, this year being the exception] it never sticks around for long. It's not like there's snow on the ground constantly from November through March."

You learn to live with it and enjoy it when you can.

And I really want to go curling sometime.

I remember the first winter after we moved from N. Michigan to TN...one morning I got up, turned on the radio as usual (and heard that schools were closed due to snow. I looked out the window and wondered where the hell the snow was.

A dusting had fallen overnight. You could still see blades of grass through the snow. Schools up north rarely ever closed for snow, no matter how much they got.

But now, after being down here over 20 years, I don't really miss all that snow.

I'm old enough to have been in grade school during 76-77 and 77-78 here in Ohio. Snow deep enough to tunnel through, crusts of ice an inch thick on the car... I also don't mind winter here in Ohio. I think I'd like Wisconsin. You need to be prepared -- you need to wear warm layers, and a waterproof outer layer -- and waterproof boots with soles that give you traction. I take issue with the way they don't clear the roads properly here in Central Ohio, but in Northeastern Ohio, where I grew up -- they were usually spot on with roads even if there was a an ice storm. I don't love driving on ice, but if people would just be a little calmer (and if they'd let us use chains on the tires in certain kinds of weather...) most winter travel doesn't have to be death defying scary. I'd really miss the snow if I lived in a place that didn't get it. I'd miss those magickal moments when you see the snow sparkle on a moonlit night. When you walk by ice covered trees, shining like silver in the morning light.

My favorite snow story of the day is President Obama (say it again: President Obama) bitching about how the schools in DC (including his daughters') are closed and there's barely any snow. Preach it, Chicago man!

I grew up in upstate New York (not Wisconsin, but plenty of cold and snow) and I have such fond memories of winter. I have always loved winter.

Now I live in NYC and we barely get any snow, and I miss it! I'm glad I don't have to shovel it before I can get to work, but life just isn't the same.

Also, maybe it is just me, but it seems like people have turned into bigger wimps about the weather since I was a kid. Schools close at the drop of a hat--even before anything happens! And there are a lot more two hour delays and early closings and whatnot, simply on the threat of the weather turning poor for driving.
