It took about two or three weeks for the flesh to "fill over" the holes in my gums, after I had my wisdom teeth extracted. I remember vividly the holes and all the food and gunk that would build up in there, though, it was gross. Good luck! And FEAR THE DRY SOCKET!!! (haha)
When I had my wisdom teeth out, the dentist gave me this syringe with a special curved tip that I could use to rinse out the sockets with warm water. Much more thorough than the tongue-flicking method, and the water actually felt kind of nice. I bet you could find something like that at the drugstore.
I think it was at least a couple of weeks before the sockets healed over enough that I didn't need to rinse them.
With the extractions that didn't require stitches, it was about 3 weeks before things were healed over enough that I wasn't paranoid. The ones that had stitches (because I waited too long to get the teeth out and they were all twisted and stuff) took a little less time, but being able to feel the string end of the stitch was really annoying.
I never actually had a hole from the 3 they took out of me. Like, the blood clot was there and it's like the skin just closed up over it and there's not even a little divot or anything where the tooth once was. And my teeth were all out, too, which may have something to do with it...I'm not sure. By out, I mean they weren't impacted, they didn't need to cut my gums to get to them - they had already come through years ago.
I was ultra-paranoid about dry-socket, though, but never had an issue. Just make sure that gauze stays wet so it doesn't stick to the clot when you go to change it out (if you're still using the gauze, that is). What I did about the brushing was use those little finger things that Oral-B makes for like a week...I'd do it slowly while I was reading fic or something, being as thorough as I could without messing with that open spot.
